Description
Tussah silk is a wild silk produced by silkworms that feed on oak leaves and live in their natural environment. The fibers are slightly less uniform and smooth than cultivated mulberry silk, giving tussah a pleasant spin and just a touch more grip.
Each batch is hand-dyed in small quantities, so every set of tops is unique in its color variations. It spins smoothly and evenly, but the slight grip makes it easier to handle than the slickest silks.
Spinning experience
Tussah silk requires less control than the smoothest silks, but it’s still much slipperier than wool. It performs best with plenty of twist and a steady rhythm. Thanks to its long staple length, it produces beautiful, strong yarns that are perfect for luxury knitting yarns, weaving, or as accents in art yarn.
In blends, tussah silk adds luster, strength, and a touch of luxury. Try blending 10–30% with wool to add strength and a subtle silk sheen to your yarn.
