Merino – extra fine, hand-dyed

Description

Merino is one of the most popular wools among spinners, prized for its incredible softness. With a fineness of 18.5 microns, this merino is classified as extrafine, perfect for yarns worn next to the skin, such as scarves, baby clothes, or other luxury projects.

How it spins

Extrafine merino feels wonderfully soft in the hand and spins into a smooth, even yarn. The fiber has a fine crimp (natural waviness), giving the finished yarn elasticity and resilience.

However, because the fibers are so fine, the scales on the surface are tiny, which means less grip. As a result, the fiber drafts apart more easily and demands steady, controlled spinning. While this makes it less suitable for beginners, intermediate and experienced spinners will enjoy creating soft, lustrous, and truly luxurious yarns.

Suitable tools

Merino can be spun on both spindles and spinning wheels. Because of the shorter staple length and smooth texture, a fast-spinning spindle (such as a size 1 or 2 Turkish spindle or a high-whorl spindle) works best. On a spinning wheel, use a medium to high ratio to produce an even yarn.

Additional information

Even though this fiber is superwash treated, we still recommend hand washing your finished yarn or projects. Superwash merino will not felt in the washing machine, but over time the colors stay much more vibrant and beautiful if you continue to wash by hand.
