How to Spin Stripy Start Merino Top
The vertical color stripes of this fiber shine best when spun “from the fold.” It may sound complicated, but it’s actually quite easy!
Take a small piece of the top, fold it over your index finger, and draft the fibers from the center, pulling from the tip of your finger. This method keeps the colors beautifully together, creating a cohesive look, and gives your yarn a lighter, woolen effect.

Which Spindle Works Best?
You can spin the Stripy Start Merino Top on any spindle. For the best balance of speed and control, we recommend a size 2 or 3 Turkish spindle. These sizes allow you to spin smoothly and achieve the yarn you have in mind.
This fiber also works wonderfully on a supported spindle. If your Turkish spindle has a slightly pointed shaft (like mine), you can use it as a supported spindle too. Spinning “from the fold” on a supported spindle using the long draw technique will result in a fully woolen-spun yarn. Want to learn more about woolen and worsted spinning? Is It Beginner-Friendly?
Absolutely! This fiber is perfect for beginners thanks to its average micron count and staple length, which provide an excellent grip. The “from the fold” spinning method is a fun and accessible challenge for those looking to try something new. This makes the Stripy Start Merino Top an exciting choice for beginners and spinners wanting to expand their skills.
Washing Stripy Start Merino
Like all non-superwash fibers, the Stripy Start Merino Top is sensitive to felting. Always hand wash your spun yarn in cold or lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing or wringing and lay your yarn flat to dry to maintain its structure and softness.
