What Are Silk Hankies?
Silk hankies are made from the cocoons of the mulberry silkworm, which are exclusively fed on mulberry leaves. During the production process, the cocoons are boiled to remove the natural glue (sericin). They are then gently stretched over a square frame, layer by layer, to create thin, translucent sheets – the hankies. This traditional method produces silk fibers that are strong, shiny, and a joy to spin.
How to Spin Silk Hankies
Spinning silk hankies is easier and more fun than you might think! Start by making a small hole in the center of the hankie and gently push the fibers outward into a thin circle. Then, break the circle open at one point to create a long roving. Now you’re ready to start spinning from one end!
Which Spindle Works Best for Silk Hankies?
Silk hankies are perfect for spinning on a Hebe spindle or a size 1 Turkish spindle. These fast, lightweight spindles provide the high speed needed to handle the smooth fibers effectively. Supported spindles, such as a Russian spindle or Tahkli, are also excellent choices. They offer precision and control, making them ideal for spinning super-fine yarns.
Are They Beginner-Friendly?
Silk hankies can be a bit challenging for beginners due to the smoothness of the fibers. However, they’re an excellent choice for improving your technique and gaining experience with luxury fibers. If you’re new to spinning, try the park & draft method for added control – it makes working with silk much easier and more enjoyable!
Washing Silk Yarns
Silk fibers are delicate, so we recommend handwashing your spun yarn or finished project in cold or lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing or wringing to keep the fibers smooth and shiny. Lay flat to dry for the best results.
