Which Spindle is Best for This Ultrafine Merino?
FeatherSoft Merino is incredibly smooth (and therefore slippery) and requires a lot of twist to create a stable yarn. A fast suspended spindle, like a Turkish spindle in size 1 or 2, is ideal for this fiber.
You can also use a fast supported spindle, such as a Russian spindle or a Tahkli, for spinning this merino effectively.
Tip: If you find it challenging or your yarn keeps breaking, try the park & draft method. This will give you more control and help you spin these luxurious fibers with ease.
Is It Suitable for Beginners?
While the medium staple length makes drafting easier, the ultrafine, smooth texture of these fibers can be tricky for beginners. If you’re just starting out, consider more accessible fibers like Soft Start Corriedale or Soft Start Merino. Want to take on the challenge? Using the park & draft method will help you gain the control you need to spin this luxurious fiber successfully.
Washing FeatherSoft Merino
FeatherSoft Merino is non-superwash and thus prone to felting. Always wash your finished yarn or project carefully by hand in cold or lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing or wringing, and lay flat to dry to maintain its softness and structure.
