Faux angora, hand-dyed

Description

Faux angora is a silky-soft, completely animal-free fiber that mimics the look and feel of real angora, but without any animal content and without the price tag. Perfect if you want to spin vegan fibers or are sensitive to (sheep) wool.

Application and effect

Even a small amount of faux angora adds a beautiful halo. By halo, we mean the soft, fuzzy haze of fine fibers that gently stick out from your yarn, giving it a soft, dreamy appearance. Blend 10–20% with other spinning fibers for extra softness and that airy cloud around your thread. Faux angora also works beautifully as a subtle addition to colored blends.

Hand blending without tools

You don’t need hand carders or a drum carder to blend these fibers. Simply pull off small pieces of fluff, hold them loosely in your hand, mix them with the other fibers and feed them in together while you spin. This way, you can start right away, even if it’s your first time blending. If you do want to use tools, hand carders or a drum carder work perfectly.

Spinning pure faux angora

Faux angora can also be spun on its own. However, it is more challenging because the fibers are very fine and very smooth. You’ll need plenty of twist and a spindle that spins fast. A size 1 or 2 spindle is ideal for faux angora. The result is soft and shiny, with less elasticity than spun sheep wool. Perfect for scarves, cowls, and luxury accents. Less suitable for high-wear items such as socks.
