Skill Level: Suitable for experienced spinners
Description
Egyptian cotton is a high-quality type of cotton with relatively long fibers for this plant, usually around 30 mm, compared to standard cotton at about 22–27 mm. That extra length makes it softer, stronger, and more pleasant to spin than many other cotton varieties.
Experience level
Egyptian cotton spins finer and more evenly than short-staple cotton, but it’s still a smooth plant fiber without natural grip. This means it needs more twist and a bit more control than wool. While beginners can try it, it’s best suited for spinners with some experience, especially those wanting to explore plant-based fibers for the first time.
Which Spindle Works Best for Egyptian cotton?
Egyptian cotton can be spun on both a spindle and a spinning wheel. Because of its smoothness, a fast-spinning tool works best, such as a takhli spindle, a size 1 or 2 Turkish spindle, or a high-whorl spindle. On a spinning wheel, a high ratio (fast setting) is ideal to add enough twist.
