Description

Banana fiber is a plant-based fiber extracted from the stems of the banana plant. It spins with a silky, smooth feel, but the finished yarn has more structure. It has a sturdier, linen-like appearance that works beautifully in robust or natural-style projects.

The fiber has a subtle sheen and a slightly coarser texture than silk, making it ideal for weaving, accessories, or accents that need both strength and visual character.

Spinning experience

Banana fiber spins fairly smoothly and therefore requires more twist than wool. The fibers are medium to long in length, producing a strong, durable yarn with little elasticity. It’s a great choice for spinners with some experience who want to explore a plant fiber with character.

In blends, banana fiber can add beautiful texture and subtle luster. Mix 10–30% banana fiber with wool to give a yarn more structure and a light linen-like character while keeping it supple.

Which Spindle Works Best for Banana fiber?

Banana fiber can be spun on both a spindle and a spinning wheel. A fast spindle (size 1 or 2 Turkish spindle, high-whorl) or a spinning wheel with a high ratio is recommended to add enough twist.

Washing

We recommend handwashing your spun yarn or finished project in cold or lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry for the best results.
