Description
Bamboo is a plant-based fiber with a striking, silky sheen. It is a wonderful and sustainable alternative to silk. While you can spin bamboo on its own for a project with beautiful drape, it is arguably even more fun to blend it with other fibers.
Spinning experience
Spinning bamboo feels cool and smooth to the touch. Because the fibers have very little “grip,” they glide easily through your hands. This requires a constant twist and a steady hand to keep the thread strong.
In a blend, bamboo is very forgiving: the wool provides the necessary grip, while the bamboo adds refinement. The end result is a yarn that catches the light beautifully and is very comfortable to wear.
Which spindle suits this fiber?
Bamboo is slightly heavier and smoother, so a stable spin is preferred. A size 2 Turkish spindle is ideal: it has enough weight for a good rotation without being so heavy that the thread breaks prematurely.
