Hand-dyed alpaca tops. Soft, warm, and lustrous fiber that spins smoothly with little natural grip. Best blended with wool for garments that need to keep their shape.
Quantity: 50 grams
Skill Level: Suitable for intermediate spinners
Description
Alpaca is a luxury fiber valued for its softness, warmth, and subtle luster. Unlike sheep’s wool, it contains no lanolin, so it feels smoother and less greasy to the touch. This makes alpaca hypoallergenic and very pleasant to work with.
The tops are hand-dyed in small batches and packed in 50 g portions. Each batch comes with its own unique color variations.
Spinning experience
Alpaca drafts more smoothly than wool and has less natural grip, since the fibers have fewer scales. This means it requires more twist and a little extra control, especially when spinning it on its own.
Spun alpaca produces a soft, supple yarn that feels wonderfully warm to wear. Keep in mind that alpaca has very little natural crimp, meaning it lacks the elasticity and springiness of wool. Because of this, 100% alpaca yarn can stretch or lose its shape over time. For garments where stability matters, it’s best blended with wool.

Which Spindle Works Best for Alpaca?
Alpaca can be spun on either a spindle or a spinning wheel. A fast-spinning spindle (such as a size 1 or 2 Turkish spindle) works well to create the extra twist needed.
Are They Beginner-Friendly?
Silk hankies can be a bit challenging for beginners due to the smoothness of the fibers. However, they’re an excellent choice for improving your technique and gaining experience with luxury fibers. If you’re new to spinning, try the park & draft method for added control – it makes working with silk much easier and more enjoyable!
